Head guide

Elin Hartmann

Twelve seasons in this forest, most of them after dark. Elin plans the night line by sound: the creek tells the distance, the wind in the canopy tells the hour, and the group walks close enough to hear both.

About Elin
The forest is not black. It is a hundred greys you have not learned yet.
Elin Hartmann, Head guide
Elin Hartmann's emblem, a hand drawn seal for the Night Line
Where she came from
Elin was a warden here for four winters before she ever led a group. She learned the Night Line by walking it alone at four in the morning, with the lamp off, until the path stopped needing one. That is still the whole method.
How she guides
She stands at the gate for the full twenty minutes, every walk, and she does not talk until someone says oh. After that she leads by sound: the creek for distance, the canopy for the hour, the group's breathing for pace.
A walk with her
Dark, then grey, then a ridge at first light with the whole forest switching on below you. Eat before. Phone in the bottom of the pack. Let the dark close and do not reach for anything.

The line, stop by stop.
